What is a CV?

A curriculum vitae (or CV) is a marketing tool to enable you to stand out from all of the other candidates to ensure that you are selected by a prospective employer for interview. In the current economic climate companies are still hiring, but with more candidates on the market it is harder than ever to make your CV shine.

On average a Hiring Manager will spend about 30 seconds looking at a CV before deciding if the candidate is of possible interest or not, while Human Resources personnel and Recruitment Consultants will spend even less, probably closer to 10 seconds. CVs that are poorly presented, lacking in basic information or littered with spelling mistakes will be easily overlooked in favour of CVs that look and feel professional. This means that often candidates who are capable of doing the job in question are overlooked, simply because their CV has let them down.

With more than 300,000 graduates joining the UK job market each year, and over 2 million unemployed, it is getting harder and harder for good candidates to stand out and get themselves noticed. Demand for jobs has never been higher, so it is essential that you do all you can to rise above the competition.

CV writing isn't easy. You need to make sure that you grab the attention of the person reading it to ensure that you progress to the next stage of the recruitment process.

So how can we help?

We can write a personalised CV just for you, that sells your skills and experiences and will enable your CV to stand out from the crowd, thus enhancing your opportunity of gaining an interview. This will be more than simply a record of your life history; your professional CV will be a powerful marketing tool that will help you secure the job you want.

We can help you no matter what stage your career is at, from graduates and school-leavers up to senior management and executives.

Recruitment Underway as New Rail Depot Brings 150 jobs to Bristol

Hitachi Rail Europe (HRE), the company building and maintaining the new InterCity Express Trains to run on the Great Western route, is recruiting for 150 new roles at its Stoke Gifford depot.

The recently built depot is hiring ahead of a new ‘bullet train inspired’ fleet entering service later this year. HRE says it will build upon the area’s engineering legacy to develop a new long-term hub for skilled work.

The newly built £80 million facility is located near to Bristol Parkway station and the firm says it offers “a clean, light and modern environment to work in”. Recruitment for the 150 jobs is to ensure the facility is ready ahead of the new trains, which will connect London to Wales and the South West of England, entering service later this year.

Work carried out at the Stoke Gifford depot will include readying trains for passenger services. Whilst housed at the depot, trains will be serviced to ensure they are in good condition, safe and clean. Day-to-day tasks will include engine tests, changing wheel sets and running thorough inspections of the trains.

The new roles are permanent and require people with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. As part of bringing new skills and talents into the industry, steps are being taken to attract people who have not previously worked in rail. HRE is looking to recruit from a variety of sectors such as aviation, automotive, and the military, as well as those groups often underrepresented in rail such as women and young people.

Amazon to create 2,500 UK jobs

Amazon says it will take on 2,500 new permanent staff in the UK this year, bringing its total number of UK employees to 14,000. The online retailer will also create thousands more jobs elsewhere in Europe.

It is investing to expand its European operations, including its warehouses, known as fulfilment centres. The company currently employs 40,000 people in Europe and last year created 10,000 jobs. It says it has invested more than €15bn (£11.5bn) on European infrastructure and operations since 2010, with £4.6bn in the UK.

Amazon said the jobs would be added across its business operations in the UK. These include posts at its new London head office, which is under construction, and at three research and development centres, in Cambridge, Edinburgh and London, as well as at a customer service centre in Edinburgh.

It will also be hiring people for its 10 warehouses and its new fashion photography studio in London. The new Amazon Web Services data centre, due to launch next year, will also need new staff as will local delivery centres.

“Britain has a world-class tech sector with a reputation for innovation and excellence,” said Amazon UK’s managing director, Christopher North. “These new jobs we are creating up and down the country are testament to the quality of the workforce in the UK and our confidence in its economy, which we are proud to support through our continued investments,” he said.

Ireland – Apple to create 1,000 jobs in Co Cork site expansion

Apple is to create 1,000 jobs in Ireland, the country’s state investment agency has said. The tech giant is adding a new building to its site in Hollyhill, Co Cork, which will include new office space for the staff by the middle of 2017, the IDA announced.

As the company’s chief executive, Tim Cook, visited Ireland, plans were also revealed for a link-up with the country’s Sustainable Energy Authority to research offshore energy technology.

A one million euro (£710,000) Ocean Energy Industry Fund is to be set up under the initiative, aimed at finding new ways of capturing wave energy and converting it to renewable electricity.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny said Apple’s plans for new facilities which can house a further 1,000 employees is a very welcome boost of confidence in Cork and the south west region.

“These new jobs come on top of 1,000 additional jobs already created at Apple in the past 12 months, which brought the workforce in Ireland to over 5,000 in 2015,” he said.

“This continued expansion by the company is testament to the quality of the talent pool, the infrastructure and the business environment that this country has to offer and further cements Apple as one of the leading employers in Ireland.”

Apple has had a presence in Ireland since 1980, when the company opened its first facility in Cork.
