What is a CV?

A curriculum vitae (or CV) is a marketing tool to enable you to stand out from all of the other candidates to ensure that you are selected by a prospective employer for interview. In the current economic climate companies are still hiring, but with more candidates on the market it is harder than ever to make your CV shine.

On average a Hiring Manager will spend about 30 seconds looking at a CV before deciding if the candidate is of possible interest or not, while Human Resources personnel and Recruitment Consultants will spend even less, probably closer to 10 seconds. CVs that are poorly presented, lacking in basic information or littered with spelling mistakes will be easily overlooked in favour of CVs that look and feel professional. This means that often candidates who are capable of doing the job in question are overlooked, simply because their CV has let them down.

With more than 300,000 graduates joining the UK job market each year, and over 2 million unemployed, it is getting harder and harder for good candidates to stand out and get themselves noticed. Demand for jobs has never been higher, so it is essential that you do all you can to rise above the competition.

CV writing isn't easy. You need to make sure that you grab the attention of the person reading it to ensure that you progress to the next stage of the recruitment process.

So how can we help?

Recruitment Underway as New Rail Depot Brings 150 jobs to Bristol

Hitachi Rail Europe (HRE), the company building and maintaining the new InterCity Express Trains to run on the Great Western route, is recruiting for 150 new roles at its Stoke Gifford depot.

The recently built depot is hiring ahead of a new ‘bullet train inspired’ fleet entering service later this year. HRE says it will build upon the area’s engineering legacy to develop a new long-term hub for skilled work.

The newly built £80 million facility is located near to Bristol Parkway station and the firm says it offers “a clean, light and modern environment to work in”. Recruitment for the 150 jobs is to ensure the facility is ready ahead of the new trains, which will connect London to Wales and the South West of England, entering service later this year.

Work carried out at the Stoke Gifford depot will include readying trains for passenger services. Whilst housed at the depot, trains will be serviced to ensure they are in good condition, safe and clean. Day-to-day tasks will include engine tests, changing wheel sets and running thorough inspections of the trains.

The new roles are permanent and require people with a wide range of experiences and backgrounds. As part of bringing new skills and talents into the industry, steps are being taken to attract people who have not previously worked in rail. HRE is looking to recruit from a variety of sectors such as aviation, automotive, and the military, as well as those groups often underrepresented in rail such as women and young people.
